Abstract

The "Phase I" groundbreaking on 15 June 1978 marked an important turning point for the Bayboro Campus. Nelson Poynter died shortly after participating in the groundbreaking. By 1981, the "new" campus took shape on the northern shore of Bayboro Harbor. Coquina Hall opened a few years later. By the mid-1980s, faculty and leaders on campus began to demand greater autonomy from USF Tampa, while many officials on the "main campus" viewed USF St. Petersburg as a remote appendage.
