Towards a labour market information system.

Abstract
The need for a properly managed labour market information system has been the focus of intense discussion in Jamaica for the past three years. The discussions have involved both Government and the private sector. Indeed, a labour market information system working group (LMISWG) was set up in 1993, with one of its mandates being to do the preliminary work for the establishment of a coherent and integrated Labour Market Information System. The need for such a system was also enunciated in the National Industrial Policy. This paper discusses a Labour Market Information System as a strategic information system with relevance to developing countries in general and Jamaica in particular. It briefly examines the kind of information managed in a Labour Market Information System. It also describes a preliminary implementation of part of such a system. We also discuss some of the institutional obstacles that have to be overcome before a Labour Market Information System can be fully utilized by those organizations who could in principle benefit from one.
