Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia and is the 6th leading cause of death in the US (pre-COVID). Dementia cases will almost triple in the next 30 years with the aging boomer population, with disproportionate increases in minority cases. Black and Latino elders have the highest risk for dementia but only represent about 5% of clinical trial participants. The Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training (PACT) study is a dementia-prevention clinical trial at the University of South Florida (USF), with an aim to enhance minority older adult participation. PACT staff, including multiple USF undergraduate research assistants, enhanced our connections with Black and Latino elders in Tampa Bay by bringing brain health education and resources into the community and spending hundreds of hours talking with community members in person and on the phone in both English and Spanish. These efforts helped increase our community participant pool of older adults interested in research participation and translated directly into increased minority elder participation in the PACT study.
