Abstract

Learn about best practices and tools that provide critical and creative thinking while helping students grow their professional brand.

Description

How can faculty provide opportunities that add skills and experience to students’ resumes? The purpose of this session is to provide best practices and tips on how to create renewable assignments that help students to enhance their professional branding and be more marketable. Renewable assignments are high-impact learning experiences that add value to students, professors, and different audiences, going beyond the traditional disposable assignments. With renewable assignments, the work performed by students has value to someone outside the classroom. This work also can be published online to encourage awareness, engagement, or influence on more audiences. This exposure helps students to develop their professional brand (online and offline), integrating elements such as personality, expertise, and consistency in content (e.g. diverse forms such as website, blogs, newsletters, video tutorials, podcasts, even series on Instagram). When assignments have an audience different than the professor or peers, students are genuinely encouraged to produce high-quality projects. Therefore, educators must invest in creating learning experiences that students do not want to miss; that is why we should understand the characteristics of today’s students; in other words, the Generation Z. Through renewable assignments, students enhance creative and critical thinking, facilitating to think outside the box and provide solutions to problems or needs. This session will provide examples of renewable assignments that can be applied in different disciplines with the use of a variety of educational technologies. Renewable assignments that promote creative and critical thinking can be applied to different types of classrooms or delivery methods.
