Develop critical thinking by breaking it down into your discipline's essential sub-skills and intentionally practicing those skills. Examples are provided froma foundational law course.
Description
Every discipline has essential skills. For example, in the study of law, the skills of advocacy and analogical reasoning are paramount. While criticalthinking is broad, it can and should be broken down into essential sub-skills most applicable to a discipline. Educators can select the set of skills mostrelevant to their field and clearly communicate those proficiencies to their students. Activities can then be developed and aligned with targeting thesesub-skills. Having the objective of practicing one or more of the sub-skills with each activity, and then providing meaningful subskill-focused feedback, willlead to cumulative overall growth in critical thinking in students. Presenters provide strategies and examples from a foundational law course at the AirForce Academy.
