Abstract

This interactive session explores strategies that provide opportunities for pre-service teachers to think critically and creatively about the use oftechnology in the classroom.

Description

Integrating technology into the classroom is vital to the future of kids in a digital age, but many teachers lack the confidence to implement it in theirclassrooms. Studies show a teacher’s perception of how hard technology is to use determines his or her willingness to try it. Researchers recommendincreasing exposure to new technologies for pre-service teachers to improve their comfort before going into the classroom. This interactive sessionexplores the strategies used in an undergraduate educational technology course to provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to not only usetechnology but think more critically and creatively about how and when to deploy it. The session highlights the use of modeling through technology-drivencourse design and scaffolding that intentionally moves students from acquiring knowledge to designing creative experiences for P-12 students.Descriptions of created assignments and access to the course learning materials will be provided.
