Abstract

Pivoting to online learning doesn't mean stopping international collaboration. We'll discuss how to bring the world into your classroom with USF's VirtualGlobal Exchange initiative.

Description

The COVID-19 pandemic forced all three USF campuses to pivot to on-line instruction. The impact on international research and global learning wasparticularly intense as global travel came to a stand-still. USF was no longer able to send students to study and research abroad. Education abroad isconsidered a high-impact practice and a critical component to USF World’s commitment to graduating globally competent students. As a nationallyranked top producer of education abroad students, USF typically sends over 1500 students abroad annually. With international travel at a halt, theeducation abroad office staff now had the capacity to develop and implement virtual global initiatives, providing students with an international experiencewithout leaving the university. According to the OECD, “Global competence is the capacity to examine local, global and intercultural issues, tounderstand and appreciate the perspectives and worldviews of others, to engage in open, appropriate and effective interactions with people fromdifferent cultures, and to act for collective well-being and sustainable development.” Global competency is important to be able to truly think critically andcreatively about world issues. During this sharing session, we will present three techniques for working with international partners to infuse globalelements in to your course-- from partnering with faculty overseas to deliver joint assignments to students, virtual tours, or designing “virtual study abroadprograms.” These innovative techniques can help students and faculty create transnational connections and gain a global perspective without leavingtheir laptops and highlights how to creatively rethink classroom instruction.
