Description

Food insecurity is the disruption of food intake or eating patterns due to lack of money or resources which can be detrimental to the physical and mental health of college students. My research plan explores what demographic factors lead to food insecurity so we can better prevent it from occurring in this population. I developed a quantitative study at the USF Tampa campus because the ethnic diversity on campus will allow me to generalize about all college students in the U.S. I identified full-time, USF-Tampa students who are 18-25 years old, and not living with a parent or guardian as eligible for this study. I used critical and creative thinking to develop this research proposal. Each decision I made in my research proposal enhanced my skill to think creatively. For example, when developing my inclusion criteria, I asked myself countless times why behind each decision I made. To think creatively meant foreshadowing certain outcomes and how they would affect my results. I also developed an online survey which asked for information about the student in terms of demographic factors, socioeconomic and financial status and determined if that student is food insecure. Aiming to answer these two broader questions will allow me to best answer my research question.
