Abstract

Become a critical and creative reader/writer! Learn how creating and interacting with text-based adventure games can stimulate creativity and critical thinking skills.

Description

The purpose of this presentation is to share the potential educational uses of text-based adventure games in the context of creativity and critical thinking. Using the open source, free, online platform, textadventures.co.uk, I will demonstrate how text adventure games can be used as a.) creative assessment tools, b.) creative reading/writing tools, c.) a medium to enhance creativity and critical thinking through game-design. A classroom topic or required reading can be creatively transformed into a text-adventure game offering a unique assessment tool. Students can only progress through the game when mastering a given story or read it critically. Using text adventure games for assessment not only evaluates performance (as in a quiz) but introduces an element of play where the game will also teach students to find the right or best answers. Similarly, turning an existing story or a topic into a text adventure game requires creativity and critical thinking skills. Game design is a useful and fitting domain to develop and cultivate creativity and to test, prototype various ideas and solutions. Through this presentation, I will demonstrate how I transformed a picture book into a text adventure game and how it offered opportunities to exercise my creativity and creative thinking skills.
