Description
Critical thinking is very difficult to teach. Not only is it complex, this skill is sometimes overlooked when designing and developing curricula. Because of working memory limitations, it is preferable to "chunk" information for students for easier processing. Based on the work of Lev Vygotsky, scaffolding occurs when an expert aids a novice by providing feedback and guidance, lifting the novice's performance. This concept was used in a Writing about Literature course to increase students' writing and analytical skills. By using templates focused on the specific assignment and "chunking" the information and process into specific steps, it aids students by decreasing the cognitive load on working memory and gives them more information to analyze and consider in the early stages of writing.
